Tesco Lotus Selects Honeywell’s Solstice® N40 Refrigerant To Lower Global Warming Potential And Carbon Emissions For 900 Stores In Thailand

Contacts: Rungnapa Charnwiset 0814948131 rungnapa@webershandwick.com Solstice N40 offers reduced carbon emissions along with easier conversion, lower costs and lower energy consumption than carbon dioxide BANGKOK, August 25, 2017 — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that Tesco Lotus, a leading retailer in Thailand and part of Tesco Group, is converting 900 Tesco Lotus Express stores to Honeywell’s Solstice® N40 refrigerant to voluntarily reduce carbon emissions. It is the first implementation in Asia of Solstice N40, the most widely accepted, lowest global-warming-potential (GWP), non-flammable replacement for R-404A in the supermarket industry. Tesco—the global parent company of Tesco Lotus in Thailand—is upgrading its supermarket refrigeration systems worldwide to lower-GWP refrigerants as part of its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint. By converting all of its 1,500 Express stores in Thailand over the next two years to Honeywell’s Solstice N40 (R-448A), the retail giant aims to achieve energy savings of up to 10 percent. This is equivalent to removing more than 67,000 cars from the road. The Thai government’s national Energy Efficiency Development Plan (EEDP) targets long-term (2011-2030) energy conservation, both at the national level and within specific energy-consuming sectors including the transportation, commercial and residential sectors. Supermarkets are the most energy-intensive type of commercial building because of their large refrigeration systems, which can account for as much as half of their total energy use. “Tesco Lotus is committed to being a green retailer and achieving our sustainability goals through a number of energy-saving initiatives within our operation. We are proud to be the first retailer in Asia to switch to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant. Honeywell’s Solstice N40 meets our key criteria for energy efficiency and performance. It is also an easy replacement for our current refrigerant, ensuring no disruption for the 15 million customers we serve on a weekly basis,” said Mr. Miroslav Friml, Property Director, Tesco Lotus. Tesco Lotus’s current refrigerant R-404A is a hydrofluorocarbon with a high GWP of 3,943. By comparison, Solstice N40 has a GWP of 1,273, making it the lowest-GWP, nonflammable alternative to R-404A refrigerant available. In 2016, refrigerant emissions accounted for 15 percent of Tesco’s total global direct carbon footprint. “Tesco Lotus is leading the way in implementing next-generation, lower-GWP refrigerant solutions in Asia Pacific,” said Anna An, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Advanced Materials, Asia Pacific. “Thailand is the first country in this region to implement Solstice N40 as a sustainable solution, representing a significant part of Honeywell’s global installations. It is very encouraging to see supermarket companies in Asia voluntarily accelerate large-scale store conversions to more environmentally preferable refrigerants.” Global adoption of Solstice products has resulted in the reduction of more than 47 million metric tons of greenhouse gases to date, the equivalent of eliminating emissions from 10 million vehicles. Honeywell estimates that increasing global adoption of Solstice products can reduce emissions by the equivalent of 475 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2025—or the impact of removing 100 million cars from the road for one year. Honeywell is a world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of refrigerants that are sold worldwide under the Genetron® and Solstice® brand names for a range of applications, including refrigeration, building and automobile air conditioning. Honeywell and its suppliers have completed a $900 million investment program in R&D and new capacity based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology.
