Honeywell’s Low-Global-Warming Refrigerant Successfully Completes Trial With Major U.K. Supermarket Chain

Contacts: Europe Sabine Knaak +49 174-217-7336 sabine.knaak@honeywell.com New refrigerant saves energy, cuts emissions compared to refrigerant being phased out by regulation BRUSSELS, Belgium, July 14, 2016 — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced that its new low-global-warming-potential supermarket refrigerant successfully completed trials with ASDA, a major supermarket chain in the U.K. that is part of the Walmart Group. The extensive, 14-month trial showed that Honeywell’s Solstice® N40 refrigerant, also known as R-448A, produced system energy savings of more than 10 percent while reducing carbon-equivalent emissions by 65 percent, compared to R-404A, a hydrocarbon (HFC) refrigerant that is being phased out under European regulations. The trial showed that only minimal adjustments were needed to adapt the Solstice N40 in existing R404A systems and that operating conditions such as discharge temperatures were well within the strict demands of compressor manufacturers. “The ASDA trials proved to us that Honeywell’s new refrigerant can help us save money on energy while also reducing ASDA’s carbon footprint,” said Brian Churchyard, Senior Manager – Construction, Model and Lifecycle at ASDA. “This is another step towards improved environmental sustainability in our business.” Solstice N40 is a nonflammable, non-ozone-depleting hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend for low and medium-temperature refrigeration equipment including supermarket chillers, frozen food cases, cold rooms and blast freezers. It is designed to replace R-22, R-507 and R-404A for both new equipment and retrofits, and provides a global warming potential (GWP) of 1387, which is 65 percent lower than R-404A. “We are pleased that Solstice N40 demonstrates such significant benefits for ASDA,” said Julien Soulet, managing director for Honeywell Fluorine Products in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India. “These results prove that Solstice N40 is the lowest GWP, non-flammable option available in the market today, and it outperforms other similar blends in energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction. Genetron Performax® LT (R-407F) continues to lead the way as the most successful reduced GWP alternative to R-404A in supermarkets globally and with even lower GWP and similar performance, we fully expect Solstice N40 demand will continue to grow and even exceed its level of adoption in the coming years.” In the EU, both Solstice N40 and R-407F can be used to retrofit systems placed on the market before 2022 and service is available for an indefinite time. Solstice N40 can be used in new commercial installations below 40kW and in all industrial installations after 2022. In addition to Solstice N40, Honeywell’s family of Solstice-branded products includes stationary, commercial refrigeration and mobile refrigerants, liquid and gaseous blowing agents, solvents and propellants – all based on Honeywell’s HFO technology that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance. The products have been developed and are being commercialized by Honeywell’s Fluorine Products business, a leader in the manufacture and supply of non-ozone-depleting and low-global warming refrigerants used by top automotive OEMs, air-conditioning and refrigeration manufacturers, supermarkets worldwide, and blowing agents for energy-efficient foam insulation, as well as hydrofluoric acid and precursors for nuclear fuel.
