HONEYWELL’S NEW SOLSTICE® L-41 REFRIGERANT COOLS HAIER’S NEW A/C

Non-ozone depleting refrigerant with lower global warming potential will reduce the carbon footprint of keeping cool Shanghai, China, August 2012. Honeywell (NYSE:HON) announced that it has collaborated with Haier Group to introduce the world’s first HFO refrigerant air conditioner. The demonstration unit, previewed at the China Refrigeration Expo, contains Honeywell’s new HFO blend refrigerant, Solstice® L-41. It is the first innovation produced by the Haier Network Smart Appliance Project, a cooperative effort between Honeywell’s Shanghai R&D center and the Haier National Laboratory. Honeywell’s HFO refrigerant, Solstice L-41, is the newest environmentally-friendly refrigerant for use in air conditioning. It offers outstanding cooling performance in all regions without the increase in power consumption seen with R-32 and R-410A when the ambient temperature goes up. And, with an ASHRAE A2L rating, it provides a welcome margin of safety over hydrocarbons. It is the ideal refrigerant for compact high-efficiency air conditioning systems. Non-ozone depleting Solstice L-41 is an advanced product with a global warming potential of less than 500, significantly lower than the currently used refrigerants like R-410A with a GWP of 2088, and HFC32, with a GWP of 675. Broad use of unitary air conditioning systems running Solstice L-41 could help China fulfill its international commitment to conserving energy and reducing greenhouse emissions. SolsticeL-41 refrigerant can be readily adapted to existing R-410A technology equipment, simplifying and speeding implementation for manufacturers. “When evaluating refrigerant technologies, many governments are currently developing legislation to phase out ozone-depleting materials, and will soon turn their attention to reducing the global warming potential of refrigerants,” said Terry Mo, general manager of Honeywell Fluorine Products in Asia Pacific. “HFO refrigerant air conditioning units developed through the joint efforts of Honeywell and Haier will meet the increasingly stringent environmental and emission standards of different countries and effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The joint Innovation Lab is also developing products with Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent, a 4th generation foam blowing agent, for closed cell insulation for refrigerators and water heaters, to provide consumers with more energy-efficient household appliances with lower global warming potential. These products can also aid China in fulfilling its international commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
