Coborn’s Inc. Chooses Honeywell’s Solstice® Refrigerant Over Carbon Dioxide To Help Reduce Costs And Save Energy

Contact: Jennifer Kramer 973-441-0023 jennifer.kramer@honeywell.com  Solstice® N40 offers easier conversion, reduced costs and lower energy consumption than carbon dioxide MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., February 21, 2017 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that Coborn’s Inc., a Midwestern retail chain with more than 50 supermarkets and 120 stores, is using its Solstice® N40 (R-448A) refrigerant to achieve energy savings of up to 16 percent and meet regulatory requirements well ahead of deadlines. Refrigeration, along with lighting, can account for more than 50 percent of a supermarket’s total energy use. Coborn’s required a refrigeration system for its new 45,000-square-foot supermarket in Isanti, Minn., where more than 50 percent of the floor space would be dedicated to fresh food. It evaluated systems using Solstice N40 and carbon dioxide (CO2), and determined that a conventional system utilizing Solstice N40 was best for the Isanti store, future new supermarkets and stores, and upcoming retrofits. Solstice N40 is a reduced global-warming-potential (GWP), hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) blend refrigerant. It demonstrates 3 percent lower energy consumption in low-temperature applications such as freezer display cases, and 5 to 16 percent lower energy consumption in medium-temperature applications such as supermarket refrigerators. Coborn’s estimates showed that a CO2 transcritical installation would cost 20 to 30 percent more than a Solstice N40 system. In addition to the greater cost of design and equipment to support CO2, Coborn’s was concerned that there would be serviceability issues related to low availability of parts and a limited pool of trained technicians. “The decision to go with a Solstice N40 refrigerant system was easy because it was significantly more cost-effective than CO2 and offered terrific energy efficiency,” said Chris Braun, project manager for Construction, Refrigeration and Maintenance, Coborn’s. “In addition, we had very good experience with Honeywell products and technical support, so we were confident the system would perform.” Coborn’s contracted St. Cloud Refrigeration Inc. (SCR) to install the new system in its Isanti store. “As a refrigeration company, we want to recommend what’s best for each customer and for Coborn’s, we saw Solstice N40 fitting into a wide realm of requirements—from satisfying upcoming GWP regulations, to delivering great energy efficiency, to being cost-effective,” said Dave Behrens, SCR supermarket sales representative. “It’s compatible with existing systems and therefore a great choice for retrofits and new builds.” “Demand for energy efficient refrigerants like Solstice N40 is growing at an unprecedented rate, as the supermarket industry transitions to solutions that cut costs, meet regulations and achieve environmental goals,” said David Cooper, business director, Honeywell Refrigerants. “The ease of conversion from previous-generation refrigerants to Solstice N40 means that companies like Coborn’s can easily plan their future stores and retrofit an entire chain of stores in the short term, and realize significant energy savings in the long term.” For retrofits without expensive equipment changes, Solstice N40 is a near drop-in replacement for R-22, R-404A and R-507, helping users comply with EPA rules aimed at phasing out commonly used, high-GWP refrigerants for supermarket refrigeration. It can also be used to replace interim blends R-402A, R-402B and R-408A. Solstice N40 has a GWP of 1273. It is non-ozone-depleting and nonflammable, and is approved for use by major compressor manufacturers. It is listed under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program and is also UL-listed. Honeywell is a world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of refrigerants that are sold worldwide under the Solstice® and Genetron® brand names for a range of applications, including refrigeration, building and automobile air conditioning. Honeywell and its suppliers are in the middle of a $900 million investment program in R&D and new capacity based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology.
