Genetron Performax® LT: R-22 Retrofit Case Study – Schnucks Market

“Genetron Performax® LT is a very good fit for Schnucks because of its lower global warming potential. The constant studying of the carbon footprint leads us to be as careful as possible to keep ours as small as we can make it.”

Bob Smith, Operations Director, Schnucks Markets, Inc., St. Louis, Missouri

With more than three decades of experience in supermarket refrigeration, Bob Smith could be considered a refrigerant retrofit expert. He was involved in the switch from CFCs to HFCs, but opted out of the interim solutions since the HFCs were working well. “With supplies of R22 beginning to dwindle, I knew it was time to look for another alternative,” Bob said.

Bob started exploring the options with a trusted supplier, who put him in touch with Honeywell. Schnucks had tried a product similar to Performax LT, but with different component percentages. “We felt we should be heading in a direction of a refrigerant that does what we want in terms of efficiency, performance, and also with lower global warming potential,” he added.

Schnucks saved time and money by using Genetron Performax® LT. Schnucks Markets has been in business since 1939, so before they could do the refrigerant conversion, some of the older cases in the stores were upgraded to offset potential leaks. When the work was done, the conversion to Performax LT was an overnight operation. “The existing expansion valves are performing very well without any adjustments,” Bob said.

Genetron Performax® LT also helped reduce retrofit project costs for Schnucks. “We’re very happy with the performance. We’re not experiencing any unusual leaks or unusual operation of the refrigerant. We had to adjust a couple of EPR valves, but that is to be expected. We typically do that with all refrigerant conversions. We keep adjusting to make sure the efficiency is as high as possible.”
