Honeywell Genetron Performax® Lt Helping Morrisons Supermarkets Maintain Competitiveness, Reduce Environmental Impact

Efficient refrigerant to become standard replacement for fresh food refrigeration at one of the U.K.’s largest supermarket chains

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Oct. 9, 2012 — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that its GenetronPerformax® LT refrigerant will help one of the U.K.’s largest supermarket chains save energy costs while reducing the environmental impact of its stores.

Morrisons Supermarkets will use the refrigerant for fresh food refrigeration applications, also known as medium temperature applications.

According to industry testing, systems using Genetron Performax® LT, also known as R-407F, consume up to 15 percent less energy than systems using R-404A, a common refrigerant used today. Less energy use translates to costs savings, and the use of Performax LT can also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40 percent. Performax LT also has a lower global warming potential than comparable refrigerants.

“Our energy initiatives can really impact our bottom line and help us achieve our environmental goals,” said Stuart Kirk, head of Energy & Carbon at Morrisons. “Replacing the refrigerant in our medium temperature applications plays an important role in the overall energy savings plans. Genetron Performax® LT is a known, proven technology that improves the energy efficiency and reduces the carbon footprint of our refrigeration systems.”

Morrisons, along with the services of specialist refrigeration contractor Honeywell Control Systems, researched how to switch from R-404A refrigerant to an environmentally friendlier and more efficient refrigerant which could upgrade their existing stores without major technological modifications. Based on these key metrics, Morrisons chose Performax LT as the standard replacement for all medium temperature applications at its stores. Morrisons is UK’s fourth largest food retailer with over 400 stores, more than 132,000 employees and 9 million customers every week.
“With refrigeration accounting for about a half of average supermarket energy bill, we have seen an increasing number of supermarkets investing in more energy efficient options while also seeking to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining safety,” Paul Sanders, managing director for Honeywell Fluorine Products in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India. “We believe Genetron Performax® LT represents the best fit.”

Genetron Performax® LT consists of a highly efficient mixture of conventional hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants (R-32, R-125 and R-134a). It can be used for new medium- and low-temperature commercial installations and also in retrofit applications to replace R-404A, R-407A and R-22 with only minor adaptations. It is a class A1 refrigerant, meaning that it has low toxicity and is nonflammable. With

Performax LT, companies and installers also do not need to make extra investment into training, since technicians’ skills required are the same as those needed for current refrigerants.
