Italy’s Art Serf Selects Honeywell’s Solstice® L40X Refrigerant For New Refrigerated Display Cases
Solstice® L40X offers better value in safety, performance, cost and environmental footprint versus propane
Heverlee, Belgium, May 6, 2020 – Honeywell today announced that Art Serf, a leading manufacturer of refrigerated display cases, is using Honeywell’s Solstice L40X (R-455A) refrigerant in its entire range of new, state-of-the-art “plug-in” cases. Refrigerated display cases keep food fresh at appropriate temperatures reliably and efficiently, while also ensuring a lower environmental footprint. Art Serf’s units are being used in public areas like canteens and self-service restaurants.
Art Serf adopted Solstice L40X to help meet strict European Union F-Gas environmental regulations without compromising on safety and performance. Solstice L40X is easier for contractors to install and maintain, with similar performance to R-404A, but offers a global-warming-potential that is 96% lower.
“Compared to propane, the safety of Solstice L40X (R-455A) is very high and is a valid alternative to hydrocarbons,” said Graziano Uliana, chief technical officer, Research and development, Art Serf. “In most cases, Solstice L40X does not require investing in certification of components per EU’s directive on equipment in potentially explosive atmosphere, known as ATEX. It’s the best balance of eco-sustainability, cost and safety for our customers.”
GeneralGas S.r.l., a leading refrigeration company based in Italy, recommended Solstice L40X to Art Serf. “Art Serf’s customers were asking for refrigerated display cases that were environmentally-friendly, and with performance comparable to units that used R-404A,” said Carmine Marotta, chief executive officer, General Gas. “Based on our experience and our commitment to understanding and anticipating the evolution of the market in which we operate, we were able to confidently recommend Solstice L40X.”
“Solstice L40X is ideal for food cooling applications where environmental considerations are critical,” said Julien Soulet, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Fluorine Products Europe, Middle East and Africa. “For Art Serf and its customers, the solution offers a compelling safety profile at the lowest total cost of ownership, while fulfilling environmental objectives and full compliance with regulations.”
Solstice L40X (R-455A) is a mildly flammable, zeotropic refrigerant with an ultra-low GWP of 146 (AR5), making it both F-Gas-ready and the safest A2L solution for commercial refrigeration applications, including plug-in cabinets, condensing units, monoblocks for cold and freezer rooms, heat pumps and chillers. The refrigerant is qualified for use in many leading compressor technologies, including Tecumseh, Bitzer, Emerson, Boyard and Frascold – with many other compressor and condensing unit OEMs having also approved or in the final stages of testing. When integrated into appropriate system architectures, Solstice L40X provides end users with a long-term, high-efficiency and cost-effective refrigeration solution.
Honeywell is a world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of refrigerants that are sold worldwide under the Solstice® and Genetron® brand names for a range of applications, including refrigeration, building and automobile air conditioning. Honeywell and its suppliers have completed a $900 million investment program in research and development, and new capacity based on Honeywell’s hydrofluorolefin technology.
