Honeywell’s Refrigerant Lowers Carbon Footprint And Increases Energy Efficiency For Midwest Supermarket Chain

Contact: Jennifer Kramer 973-441-0023 jennifer.kramer@honeywell.com Festival Foods builds new supermarket specifically designed to run Solstice® N40 refrigerant MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., Aug. 17, 2016 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that Festival Foods is the first supermarket chain to build a new store with refrigeration equipment designed to run Honeywell’s reduced-global-warming refrigerant, Solstice® N40 (R-448A). Solstice N40 is a reduced global-warming-potential (GWP) hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) blend refrigerant for low- and medium-temperature refrigeration equipment such as supermarket refrigerated and freezer display cases. Festival Foods, a family- and employee-owned chain of more than 20 state-of-the-art supermarkets, aspired to reduce its environmental impact while also increasing energy efficiency. By constructing its Somers, Wisconsin location with the latest in refrigeration equipment designed by Zero Zone, they achieved their goal. “We are excited to further our efforts in energy conservation with the addition of this new equipment,” said Mark Skogen, president and CEO, Festival Foods. “By designing our refrigeration systems to work with Solstice N40, we expect to increase the energy efficiency of our Somers location by three percent or more when compared to other Festival Foods locations. That’s a big win for the environment, and it will lower our energy costs as well.” Following the successful start-up at the Somers location, Festival Foods plans to design all new stores to use Solstice N40. “Supermarket owners are looking for more energy-efficient and environmentally preferable refrigerants,” said Robert Kebby, global business manager for Honeywell’s commercial refrigeration business. “With superior energy efficiency and GWP that is 68 percent lower than R-404A, Solstice N40 offers supermarkets a solution that can best serve their refrigerant needs while meeting environmental demands.” “Zero Zone is excited to be working with environmentally conscious food retailers like Festival Foods and industry suppliers like Honeywell to develop and incorporate leading, new refrigerant solutions such as Solstice N40,” said Bruce Hierlmeier PE, director of Regulatory Compliance and Refrigeration Technology, Zero Zone. “R-448A is a viable alternative to R-404A for medium- and low-temperature display cases, providing food retailers with a practical, easy-to-use solution to achieve lower overall energy consumption and lower overall GWP of their retail food stores.” In supermarket trials conducted in the U.S. and Europe, Solstice N40 demonstrated three percent lower energy consumption in low-temperature applications and five to 16 percent lower energy consumption in medium-temperature applications compared to R404A. It is a near drop-in replacement for R-404A and R-507, and can also be used to replace R-22, helping users comply with new rules from the Environmental Protection Agency aimed at phasing out commonly-used high-GWP refrigerants for supermarket refrigeration. By July 20, 2016, R-404A and R-507 will be unacceptable in retrofit systems under the EPA rule, and by January 1, 2017, for new supermarkets. Solstice N40 has a GWP of 1273. It is non-ozone-depleting and nonflammable, and is approved for use by major compressor manufacturers. Solstice N40 is listed under the U.S. EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program and is UL-listed. In addition to Solstice N40, Honeywell’s family of Solstice-branded products includes refrigerants for stationary, commercial refrigeration and mobile refrigerants, liquid and gaseous blowing agents, solvents and propellants—all based on Honeywell’s new HFO technology that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance. Adoption of Solstice products by Honeywell customers worldwide has resulted in the reduction of more than 28 million metric tons of greenhouse gases to-date, equal to eliminating emissions from more than six million cars. These products have been developed and are being commercialized by Honeywell Fluorine Products, a business enterprise within Honeywell’s Advanced Materials. Advanced Materials businesses manufacture a wide variety of high-performance products, including environmentally preferable refrigerants, and materials used in end products such as bullet-resistant armor, computer chips and pharmaceutical packaging. Fluorine Products is a leader in the manufacture and supply of non-ozone-depleting and low-global warming stationary, commercial refrigeration and mobile refrigerants, liquid and gaseous blowing agents, solvents and propellants, as well as hydrofluoric acid and precursors for nuclear fuel.
